Spring Hunting Season: What to Hunt — and Where

Didn’t winter just seem to drag on forever this year?

Technically it’s still winter until Saturday, March 20th, but the start of this month seems to be the beginning of spring. Once the snow starts to disappear in many areas, it’s time to start thinking about getting out for a springtime hunt. There are great places to go this year that have a variety of wildlife primed and ready to deliver a stellar hunting experience.

Here are a few of our top locations and animals to bag this season.

Bears in Wyoming and Idaho

Are you brave enough to hunt burly bears? Of course you are, what a ridiculous question.

Head up to Wyoming or Idaho to nab some of the best game in this species of black bear that is best hunted on horseback. These types of specialty hunts should be done with a guide or experienced outfitter establishment, like Non Typical Outfitters in Alpine, Wyoming. They offer forest style camping or cabin lodges with the horses staying right on site with you. You’ll feel a bit like you’ve stepped back to the days of the old Wild Wild West on one of these rustic hunts. Keep in mind that bear hunting season in Wyoming is short, running only in May.

Florida Is for Turkeys

If you are ready to truly enjoy the spring and shed some layers, it’s time to hunt Turkeys in Florida. The turkey hunting season starts March 6th and runs through April 11th in general. Check the website on Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation to find out the specific locations and exact dates because it varies depending on what part of the state you are in. You will also need a specific turkey hunting license to nab at least two turkeys per day on your hunt.

A Hawaii Hog Heaven

Want a heavenly experience that combines hunting with the ultimate island paradise? Hawaii it is! You can hunt wild boar in Hawaii like the islanders have done for thousands of years. You have to obtain a Hawaiian hunting license while you are there, so it’s best to go with an outfitter like Lopaka’s Aloha Adventures. They not only specialize in wild boar hunts, but have a pretty impressive spearfishing expedition. This is suitable for families even with children over ten-years-old. Definitely a memorable vacation over the usual theme park or basic beach trip.

Beaver, Mink, and Muskrat Trapping (Oh My!) In Upstate New York

Through the first week in April, you can trap these rodents in upstate New York with wild abandon. Better dress warmly though since it’s still pretty cold during the spring in the northern parts of the United States. Luckily in New York state there aren’t any bag limits on beaver, mink, or muskrats in this part of the country.

Did you see something on the list that you’ve never hunted before? Make your plans now for an amazing spring hunting trip that you’ll never forget. Happy spring hunting season everyone!
