There may be some discussion throughout the country about whether or not teachers should be carrying guns, but Florida has made its decision.
Florida lawmakers had apparently had enough, and want to provide the best possible protection against rabid shooters — guns in the hands of educators. This bold move has been meeting with some raised eyebrows and negativity around the country, but Floridians are standing strong to protect their children in the best possible way.
12 School Shootings So Far This Year
So far, 2019 is proving to be an extremely bad year to be at school, which makes students, parents and teachers extremely antsy. The roster of shootings so far is extremely troubling, and started in January with a shooting in Memphis. From there:
- Baltimore, MD
- Kansas City, MO
- Montgomery, AL
- Prescott, AR
- Charlotte, NC
- Highlands Ranch, CO
- Savannah, GA
There are few regions that haven’t been touched by these gun-related incidents, meaning it’s unlikely that the various state gun laws are doing much to prevent this from happening.
Florida Shows Some Guts
While other states are rapidly passing ridiculous laws banning guns from schools, Florida has decided to take a step in the right direction and proactively encourage teachers to get their concealed carry permits and learn how to protect themselves and their students from crazies bearing guns.
It is a sad state of affairs that we as a country have come to this point, but it’s good that Florida lawmakers have begun to recognize what Second Amendment advocates have seen for years: restrictive gun laws don’t hurt anyone but the victims of gun violence. They certainly don’t prevent people from illegally obtaining a weapon and opening fire in a location that is dotted with children and adults alike. There are no equal opportunities for these victims of gun violence. They are often left unable to protect themselves and others through the confinement of legal restraints.
It Shouldn’t Take This Much Violence
While lawmakers in Florida have finally seen the light and decided to allow individuals the ability to protect themselves and the children in their charge, it shouldn’t take this level of violence before people wake up and realize that — as a nation — we are headed in the wrong direction by being overly restrictive of the types, sizes and access to weapons that can serve to protect our homes and families.
Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis immediately signed a Guardian Law into effect that ensured a select few educators were able to access firearms during the school day. This most recent measure will help not only protect the schoolchildren, but will hopefully form a template that others states can use to proactively arm those who are protecting our most important assets throughout the day — our children.
