Spring Turkey Hunting 2020: What You Need to Know

Gobble, gobble, gobble!

Spring turkey hunting season is on the horizon. If you love to go out and hunt these tasty birds, you probably know that March through May is the time that typically people are allowed to hunt these glorious gobblers.

Here are some tips and information about turkey hunting season that will get you excited about going out to hunt these big birds.

States Have Slightly Different Seasons

States set their own rules and regulations regarding Spring turkey hunting season. For example, in Florida turkey hunting season is from March 2 to April 7 in South Florida, and March 16 through April 21 anywhere north of State Road 70. So you can see it’s even more specific for different regions of the state.

There is also usually a bag limit for each person with a turkey hunting license per season. Usually this limit is around two birds.

Looking at one of the northern states, like New York, the Spring turkey hunting season is May 1 through May 31. For junior hunters, meaning those under the age of 18, they get a bit of a jump on the season. The annual youth hunt takes place over a weekend, usually in late April. This gives young hunters a chance, when they are with a licensed adult, to nab their own game.

Out west in Utah, the hunt for turkeys usually begins around April 29 and goes through May 31. In that state there are around 25,000-35,000 turkeys roaming out in the wild. The south central region is where the densest population of the birds exist in nature. That’s around 2-3 hours south of Salt Lake City.

No matter where you decide to hunt turkeys, it pays to look up each specific state’s regulations where you may want to plan your Spring turkey hunting trip.

The Natural Wild Turkey Federation is a Great Resource

A perfect resource for everything to do with turkey hunting is the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF). Their extensive website is chock-full of information on conservation, hunting, events, and resources that will allow you to plan the best Spring hunting trip ever to bag those incredible birds.

An article that will help out beginners to experts on the website is Turkey Hunting 101. In it there are tips on the basics of hunting wild turkeys, the hunting seasons, how to properly gear up, what to do while you are hunting, and how to take your prize home.

Turkeys are Tricky Animals

It may seem like easy hunting to nab a turkey, but it’s trickier than you might think. Having the right call is key to successful hunting. There are also turkey decoys that you can buy which will attract them to the area you are hunting in.

Vests or backpacks that are made for turkey hunting with all the right pockets can also be helpful to you while you are on the hunt. Redhead Classic Turkey Vest is perfect with two extra large pockets, a space for your box call, a game bag, and orange reflective patches. The shoulders are padded too for extra comfort while you are out in the wild.

So, get ready for a fantastic Spring turkey hunting season everyone!
