Liberal Lawmakers Changing Zoning Laws to Fight Gun Ownership

Gun-hating liberals are always on the lookout for ways to reduce the rights of Americans, and have increasingly been having trouble getting their agenda pushed through in the courts.

This is becoming such a problem that Democrats are having to become a bit more creative in the ways they attempt to restrict gun rights — now they’re going so far as to turn to zoning ordinances in an attempt to remove guns from the hands of law-abiding individuals.

It may seem crazy but it’s true: there are several small towns throughout the country where lawmakers are trying to tighten up the gun laws in this sneaky and roundabout way. This type of restriction is harder to fight than ever before, so let’s hope that this direction doesn’t circulate throughout the country.

There are plenty of unorthodox methods that are being put in place in an attempt to limit the rights of individuals to keep or bear arms. The Windsor Planning Commission in Windsor, California, is plotting a devious method for reducing the access to purchase weapons. When a firearm retailer wished to enter the town and sell their wares, the council suddenly decided that they needed to urgently pass some additional legislation that would maintain a specific distance between schools, parks and any type of gun retailers. When there were no other laws in place that would have allowed the council to turn down the gun retailer’s application to sell firearms, the Commission took action on their own.

Not only did they restrict firearm sales, but they also placed a full moratorium in March 2018 that was extended an entire year until March 2019. Their recommendation was based on the city of Healdsburg, whose zoning ordinance is also anti-gun and anti-gun retailers.

While there are already special permits required for firearm sales by sporting goods stores and other retailers, the enhanced rules would limit gun sales in areas that are zoned neighborhood commercial, downtown, town center and in their boulevard commercial zoning districts. This leaves only a few locations within the town where firearm sales will be permitted — albeit with restrictions.

An extensive review process includes approval by the local police department, compliance with specific standards, applications for a use permit and defined statements about the applicability and purpose of the business. Each of these hurdles provides yet another opportunity for the town to refuse the application for gun sales in this tightly liberal town.

Windsor’s local leaders have taken yet another step in an attempt to reduce the rights of retailers. Individuals are required to make an appointment before buying semi-automatic long rifle firearms, and none of these weapons are allowed to be displayed in the window display or in the store. Purchasing firearms is likewise restricted in Windsor, with individuals required to register and undergo a 10-day waiting period and a training course before they are permitted to make a firearm purchase.
