As part of being a responsible gun owner, training is of the utmost importance, and having a well-rounded instructor makes all the difference. There’s a gun rights group that wants to help more women get the proper firearms training. In fact, they are offering this free program to 4,000 women.
Legally Armed in Detroit is the gun advocacy group that is making this happen for quite a few of their citizens who many not be able to access or afford their own training. This will take place at two southeast shooting ranges in Michigan that have agreed to lend their facilities and trainers to the cause.
The class is completely complimentary for these women. It will go over things like safety, proper usage, and will allow them to use a weapon and ammunition without any cost to them. They also welcome women that have experience if they want to brush up on their skills.
A Program Celebrating Its 10th Year
This program was created 10 years ago by Rick Ector, who founded Legally Armed in the Detroit area. As an NRA-trained instructor, Ector came up with these free lessons after seeing how bad the violence was against women in his area. In the first year they offered these courses, they only trained around 50 women. Now in its 10th year, they have the goal of making sure that 4,000 women get the firearms training they need to protect themselves in a city that has been described as one of the most dangerous in America.
Detroit is routinely ranked as the number one worst for gun violence, and has a violent crime rate of 2,007 instances per 100,000 people. Obviously, making sure that more women can defend and protect themselves with firearm training is a much needed and appreciated program.
The Two Gun Ranges
The two gun ranges that are participating this year are Recoil Firearms and Top Gun Shooting Sports. Both are located in the Taylor, Michigan area, a suburb of Detroit in the Downriver area. The event takes place on Aug. 21-22, 2021 and women who are still interested can check out their Facebook page to see if slots are still open. You can even look at a video of last year’s event on YouTube to see how everything is run. It’s open to women 12 years and up, but for those under 18, they need a parent’s permission to attend the event. The day starts at 9AM and runs through 7PM, with slots going on each hour that women can sign up for. There will be giveaways and raffle prizes to win, as well.
It’s nice to see an organization, like Legally Armed, making sure that more of their community knows how to effectively arm and protect themselves the right way.
