Guns are an expensive purchase for any family, and one that can cause a great deal of damage if handled improperly.
When you invest in a gun safe, not only are you keeping your guns away from the prying eyes of others, you are also protecting your family from an accidental injury that can be caused by the mishandling of a weapon. Families in decades past may have been a bit more haphazard about locking guns away, but today’s society has changed significantly.
Even if you train your child about gun safety from birth, there is always the possibility that they have a friend over who becomes curious about a weapon that they find hidden in a closet or corner. The best course of action is to have an adequate gun safe that will protect both your firearms and your family from harm.
Portable or Secure?
Gun owners may find themselves needing to make a decision about whether they want their gun safe to be incredibly portable or have added security. Many large gun safes are much too heavy to transport to a shooting meet, for example — while a competitive shooter needs to keep their weapons adequately protected while they’re on the road. The more durable and heavy-duty the gun safe, the more likely it is to be expensive and bulky to transport. Here are some of the ways that you can protect a weapon without resorting to a massive gun safe:
Trigger locks or trigger shoes: These are meant to keep the trigger from being manipulated by unauthorized individuals. Some locks prevent the trigger from being manipulated, while others are designed to hold guns open, prevent a magazine from being loaded or the cylinder from closing.
Gun cases: These can be anything from a sleeve with significant padding around it and a small lock on the zipper closure to a hard-sided case that includes a more secure lock. These locked cases are helpful for preventing small children from accessing the weapons, but will not protect a weapon from being stolen.
Security cases: These products are a cross between a more robust gun safe and the more portable gun case. There are a variety of locking options that include electronic keypads and biometric fingerprint readers. Security cases are often meant to be bolted into your vehicle’s trunk or into a closet or other secure area of your home.
Gun Safes
Selecting a gun safe requires you to consider a variety of different options, including the size of your weapons, the number of guns you need to protect, and other items that you’d like to keep stored. Gun safes are generally made of a heavy metal, and can cost from $500 to up to $3,000 for a large gun safe. While you don’t want to over-purchase, you do want to get a gun safe that will be large enough to handle not only the weapons you have today but the ones you plan to purchase in the near future.
While an investment, gun safes and other devices such as security cases and trigger locks will improve your peace of mind by protecting your weapons from unauthorized access, and keeping your family safe from harm. Your local gun shop can help you determine which size and type of protection is best for your unique weapons cache!
