Self Defense Insurance — Is it Actually Worth It?

If you are a responsible gun owner, this is something you need to look into.

The goal of self defense insurance, sometimes called concealed carry insurance, is legal protection in the event you shoot someone while protecting yourself. It can be invaluable if you feel you have serious home defense needs.

Let’s look at some of the details around self defense insurance and why it’s something you should invest in.

What Does Self Defense Insurance Cover?

This insurance covers the cost of legal expenses you may incur if you injure someone while defending yourself with your firearm. Sometimes it requires you to hire an attorney to defend your rights. This can be very expensive, which is why this type of insurance exists. It helps to offset the cost if this situation happens to you. The cost is usually thousands and thousands of dollars if your case goes to trial.

Criminal and Civil Protection

When you have to go to court to defend yourself in the event you shoot someone in self defense, your insurance will cover the attorney fees and court costs. It also covers your expenses in civil cases.

For example, say you shoot an intruder that has entered your home, killing them. If their family comes after you in civil court proceedings, even if that person was a criminal, your expenses will be covered. It’s a piece of mind type of protection that will allow you to protect yourself in the event you have to use your weapon in self defense.

Many people go bankrupt trying to defend themselves in criminal or civil court. Self defense insurance aims to prevent that financially devastating problem from happening.

The Level of Protection Varies

Depending on which insurance company you go with, your level of protection may vary. Make sure you read the fine print before signing up for any policy. Some companies offer full financial protection, while others may just give you free access to their roster of attorneys for defense or simple legal advice.

Knowing what you are getting for your insurance coverage is key. Look for deductibles, exclusions, or caps on coverage. Everything should be outlined in great detail so you know what you are getting for your money.

Keep in mind that some of these policies may also include coverage when you use another weapon that isn’t a firearm, such as a knife, pepper spray, or baseball bat.

Some Companies to Look At Using for Self Defense Insurance

Here are a few companies that offer this kind of concealed carry insurance. Each of these providers offer different levels of protections, so it helps to look at a few of them to find out what is right for you and your level of comfort with protection.

  • The United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA)
  • CCW Safe
  • US Law Shield
  • Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network (ACLDN)

  1. I dont need insurance to kill a intruder or a trespasser willing to do harm, and If I see him or her caring a knife or a gun that shows there intent, if they become a treat before law enforcement arrives , there going to get shot as sure as the sun comes up in the morning. and no body is going to jail but straight the morgue.

  2. Your home is your kingdom… defending that is your right when danger lurks within..

  3. In todays world you can be dragged into court no matter what led up to the shooting. You could be defending your home, family or your life & still be in court trying to explain what happened & why you did what you did. If you do not have a lawyer that understands shooting situations it’s going to cost you. Might be just money, might be jail time.
Everyone has the choice to do what they want, but I would not want to face a sneaky lawyer that can twist everything you say & make it sound like you are in the wrong.

  4. THAT IS NOT FAIR: IF THERE (FAMILY) CAN SUE US WHY NOT THAT WE CAN’T SUE THEM FOR THEIR FAMILY MEMBER FOR BREAKING INTO MY HOME, CAR. DAMAGEING MY PROPERTY AND LAWYER AND COURT EXPENSES. LOOK AT THIS IT WAY WHAT IS GOOD FOR THE GOOSE IS GOOD FOR THE GANDER.

THE BIBLE SPEAKS ABOUT DURING THE LAST DAY PEOPLE WILL SAY EVIL IS GOOD AND GOOD IS EVIL. I BELIEVE WE ARE THERE.
