NY Politicians Double Down on Gun Control After Truck Attack

Leading New York politicians proved their complete illiteracy on firearms once again by doubling down on calls for stricter gun control laws as a way to prevent terror attacks such as the one that occurred last week from happening again — an attack which involved no firearms whatsoever.

On October 31, 29-year-old Uzbek immigrant Sayfullo Saipov used a truck rented from Home Depot to mow down civilians in Lower Manhattan. Witnesses report that Saipov vocalized the phrase “Allahu Akbar” during the attack, reminiscent of many other terror events influenced by Islamic ideology.

Despite the event involving no firearms, this didn’t stop New York City Mayor Bill di Blasio for calling for tighter gun laws as a means to prevent similar events from occurring in the future.

“There’s a much bigger conversation we could have about gun safety,” the mayor said. “The NYPD has always vigorously believed that we need to keep guns out of this city and that gun safety laws are here to protect us and protect our officers.”

The puzzling statement was supported by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, a fellow Democrat also known for taking a hostile stance toward gun owners.

“I think it is madness the number of assault weapons that we have in this country,” he said. ” I think that it endangers law enforcement. I think that it costs us untold numbers of deaths. And I hope that one day we’ll have a federal policy that actually brings sanity to the gun policy laws in this country.”

If we follow the statements made by di Blasio and Cuomo to their logical conclusion, shouldn’t we really be talking about banning trucks – or maybe compromise by passing a bill that limits the size of the wheels they are able to use?

It is a travesty that the people of New York City must once again wrestle with the aftermath of terrorism. If there is any silver lining, however, it is that there is a cold lesson to be learned: committed terrorists will use any and all means necessary to inflict their cowardly acts of violence. Sometimes, this means using vehicles instead of firearms. In the unlikely event New Yorkers will actually ban the use of vehicles in their city, there is no doubt those who maintain a hatred for the West will find another way.
