Letting Cops Decide Who Gets to Have Guns is a Precursor to a Police State

We have all seen the movies where police and military take over the population — where civilians have few to no rights to live their lives in this dystopian future.

Invasive police searches, involuntary search and seizure of weapons — these are the hallmarks of a civilization on the brink. Unfortunately, one state has decided to let cops choose who gets to keep their weapons and who arbitrarily loses access to them, permanently and without due process of law.

Massachusetts already has an extremely aggressive procedure required to gain access to firearms, but this law has extremely slippery and ill-defined requirements that allow law enforcement professionals a great deal of leeway when it comes to making the decision about who gets — and keeps — their guns.

The Naughty Northeast

New York and New Jersey already have this sort of law in place for handguns, and New York is notorious for their slow and tedious gun permit application process.

There have been several stories about New York law enforcement professionals taking bribes to speed along the handgun approval process, too. None of this provides law-abiding individuals with an easy way to gain access to the firearms guaranteed by their Second Amendment rights, and the new law in Massachusetts seeks to strip away even more of those rights.

All in all, the naughty northeast may not be the first choice of states to move to if you’re a responsible gun owner.

Disarming the Population

The Hunger Games, Star Wars and even 1984 by George Orwell all show what happens when police and military personnel are given unlimited power to make decisions on behalf of the populace. In these stories, you see citizens lingering in fear while looking for ways to fight back against the opposition — which in these cases, is the law. No one wants to see this type of situation in the future of the U.S., but it’s not unreasonable to think that we could get to this point in the future.

There are already gun riots in the streets, both for and against gun control. Police are having to take ever-stronger measures to maintain control at these “demonstrations”, meaning it’s only a matter of time until the force needed to maintain control escalates.

Currently, cops use the relatively arbitrary “credible evidence” of a problem as a way of stripping away the rights of individuals to have a firearm. This doesn’t require any sort of prior arrests, warrants or anything that concrete. Instead, officers are able to have a “feeling” that something isn’t quite right — and that’s plenty of evidence for them to revoke firearm privileges or deny an application for firearms.

It’s hard to believe that this level of power has already been granted in Massachusetts, but it’s more frightening to hear that liberals are fighting hard to have this same type of law instituted throughout the country.
