First County in Florida to Become a Second Amendment Sanctuary City

Florida has its first Second Amendment sanctuary city.

This is terrific news for residents and gun enthusiasts alike who just want less restrictive gun laws. Lake County approved this resolution that will help to solidify gun rights to residents there. It is the first county in Florida to achieve this, but more and more counties around the country are passing this type of legislation at a local level to combat gun control by the federal and state governments.

Passed Unanimously

The county is located in central Florida near the Orlando and Kissimmee metropolitan areas. The population numbers at almost 300,000 people, so this is a large area with many citizens who want to exercise their Second Amendment rights without interference by the federal government. The Lake County Board of Commissioners approved the measure by a unanimous vote. It definitively allows private citizens to exercise their right to bear arms without having to follow restrictive rules around gun control.

The Trend is Only Going to Grow

Lake County might be the first in Florida to enact this legislation, but it is part of a more common movement gaining traction around the country. Other cities and counties that are making this designation include counties and cities in Colorado, California, Illinois, Wisconsin, Virginia, Texas, and Arizona. All have recently passed resolutions declaring less strict gun laws.

This is especially important for a state like California, which has long been one of the worst states to own a gun in. A town called Needles joined the movement by approving a similar status. It’s located on the border of Arizona in southern California. Lawmakers there passed their legislation in July of this year, because they just want licensed gun owners to be able to conceal carry around town. With a population of only 5,000 people, this small town made big news by becoming the first in California with this designation.

Where Does Sanctuary City Come From?

The movement shares the “sanctuary city” name that usually refers to cities where immigrants aren’t asked about their citizenship status, and will not aid the federal government in enforcing immigration laws.

This is relatively new to the anti-gun control movement, with the first Second Amendment sanctuary city being passed into existence last year by Effingham County in Illinois. So, a trend was born which many gun rights activists quickly began exploring. Luckily, the movement has caught on in over 19 different states, and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

Other Florida Counties Joining In

Just this week, Marion and Suwannee counties in Florida also voted to make theirs sanctuary cities as well. Clay County is also set to become the fourth county in Florida with their vote taking place in the coming weeks. It’s expected to pass considering the commissioner there, Gavin Rollins, said that he “wants Clay County to make a strong statement about its position on guns.”

The tide seems like it’s finally turning for gun lovers in America.
